Do I Need the Shingles Vaccine?

Do I Need the Shingles Vaccine?

Shingles is a painful, often debilitating condition that can affect anyone who has had chickenpox. At Samuel Fink MD, located in Tarzana, California, our mission is to help you stay healthy and informed about preventive care options. Vaccination is one of the most effective ways to lower your risk of shingles. Do you need the shingles vaccine? Read on to find out.

Understanding shingles

Shingles, also called herpes zoster, is the result of the reactivation of the varicella-zoster virus, which is the same virus responsible for chickenpox. Following your recovery from chickenpox, the virus remains dormant in your nerve tissue but can reactivate years later as shingles. The condition typically causes a painful rash and can lead to complications such as postherpetic neuralgia, which is long-term nerve pain.

Your risk of developing shingles increases as you age, particularly for individuals over 50 years of age.

Who should get the shingles vaccine?

The shingles vaccine, known as Shingrix, is recommended for most adults aged 50 or older. Even if you've had shingles before or received the earlier Zostavax vaccine, getting Shingrix can provide enhanced protection. Shingrix is more than 90% effective at preventing the development of shingles and its accompanying complications.

Benefits of the shingles vaccine

The shingles vaccine offers several advantages:

Are there risks or side effects?

Like all vaccines, Shingrix can have side effects and may include mild pain, redness at the injection site, and fatigue, all of which typically subside within a few days. Serious side effects are rare, but we’re here to address any concerns you may have.

Take charge of your health

Getting vaccinated is a powerful step toward protecting your health. If you’re over 50 or have specific health concerns, scheduling your shingles vaccine could prevent unnecessary pain and complications.
